Book Review: From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya by Ruth A. Tucker
Ruth A. Tucker wrote From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya originally in 1983. This tome is quite readable and enjoyable. It is formatted in a way that each person covered is given a few pages. One can pick up the book and read a couple biographies each day, and be edified. Each biography is surprisingly honest, giving you a clear view of these missionary's marriages and family. Some missionary families divorced; other families harbored bitterness with each other for years.
One lesson I learned from this read, is how incredibly stubborn missionaries are. They are so committed to the great commission nothing will stay in their way, even family. It is a good lesson for Christians to remember priorities...
1. God's will
2. Family commitments
3. Etc
If you want to ignite a zeal for missions, and the missionary lifestyle, this is one of the best books out there. It is a great summary of missionaries, providing a glance into their lives, and how God powerfully worked through them.
This is one of my favorite books. Highly recommend it, if you want to understand Christian missions.
Did I send you my just finished book on the history of Mission Inn turkey Iran in the Arab world? It’s in title the greatest toil ever storied. It’s only in an email format right now.
ReplyDeleteHow many hours a week are you able to give to Thoughtful reading? Do you journal app plications, Like Jim Elliot did?
I haven’t gotten that. I’d be really excited to read that.
DeleteI try to commit one hour a day. That right now will cover Bavinck, a particular book, and Brakel.
I currently don’t keep journal application notes, but I will definitely consider it, because Elliot did so. It’s a really good idea.
